While taking a course in English 111 expository writing we were instructed to choose a topic and write an informative and argumentative essay about it. The topic I chose was mental illness and the stigma that follows it. I chose this topic because I have a soft heart for the mentally ill because I’ve always felt they’ve been pushed around. I’m far from a great author but I hope these essays really open your eyes and educate you about mental illness and the harm that stigma causes.
My first essay was my informative essay “Mental Illness”. This essay was written to inform the reader about the many different diagnosis of mental illness. I dive into just a few of the many mental illnesses that effect many citizens in the U.S. I probably could have made this paper a little more informative and gave some more supporting facts.
The second essay I wrote is “Discrimination Among the Mentally Ill”. I wrote this essay to argue the fact that people need to educate themselves and help educate others on how stigma and discrimination can really affect the mentally ill. I feel like I could have gave a little more detail in my argument.
The final essay is my reflective essay “My Reflection of English 111”. Here I reflect on what I have learned in this class and how I can take what I learned and use it in the real world.
I know I wasn’t able to give all the information on all the mental illnesses and all of the interventions on how to stop the stigma. I just hope that these essay will help you understand and maybe look into it a little further.
Please take the time to watch the videos, they are very informative.
